What are DVC Points? and why you need them for Rental?

Introduction to Disney Vacations Clubs Rental Points

When it comes to the Disney Vacations Club, we always hear about DVC Points, or Disney vacation club points. These points are important for the entire vacation ecosystem since they are the currency that moves members around. What are DVC points? Why are they important? Why do people rent them?

DVC Points

Disney vacation club members can rent out their points for any number of reasons. For example, people couldn’t always travel freely during the pandemic so they were able to rent their points to others who could!

Every resort charges a different number of points per stay, and it also depends on the day of the week and the time of year. Some resorts cost 150 points per stay, while others are more, and others are less. Some of the most expensive DVC resorts are the Polynesian, Riviera, and the Grand Floridian.

On the other hand, some of the less expensive resorts are the Boardwalk, Old Key West, and Animal Kingdom, and those tend to fill up very fast.

From where can you rent DVC points?

You can rent DVC points directly from DVC members or through a broker. The broker option will cost more but would also add more protection. If you use a broker, they will do all the work of finding the members and agreeing on price. For example, a DVC member may rent you points for $15/per point, but that same points would cost you near $19/per point if rented through a broker.

If you choose to go with the direct member option, you need to find them yourself, and negotiate the price, and then check for availability. Members usually tend to rent all their points and not just a portion of it, meaning if you just need 170 points and the member has 200 points, he/she would more likely want to rent all their points at once to someone else.

Another option is to rent a confirmed reservation from a member or a broker. This is where a member has already booked a trip and will just sell it to you and change the name on the reservation to your name.

Both mouseowners.com and Facebook groups are the most common way for people to find DVC points to rent directly.

The advantages of DVC Points Rental

  • Save money off the rack rate (keep in mind that each resort’s discount is different)

The disantages of DVC Points Rental

  • You can't change your booking once you pay for it (although some brokers may provide some kind of a cancellation policy. Such policies are more and more applied especially when the pandemic shut down everything and a lot of people lost their money - Do your own research!)
